Energy
Leading the UK’s energy transition
Aberdeen has long been recognised as a global energy hub, central to UK energy security and at the forefront of the transition to net zero. With world class oil and gas expertise, a strong supply chain, and the UK Government’s decision to base GB Energy here, the region is uniquely positioned to lead the next chapter in energy.
Offshore Wind
The North East is one of Europe’s top locations for low-carbon development, especially offshore wind.
- ScotWind & INTOG: New projects will deliver 27.6GW of capacity, with most fields within 100 nautical miles of Aberdeen. Many operators are already basing operations here.
- Moray East Wind Farm: Scotland’s largest, powering 40% of Scottish homes.
- European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre: A testbed for some of the world’s most powerful turbines.
- Floating Wind Innovation Centre (FLOWIC): The UK’s first hub dedicated to floating offshore wind, driving global innovation.
These projects not only boost investment and supply chain opportunities but also support the decarbonisation of North Sea operations.
Hydrogen
Aberdeen is the UK’s leading hydrogen city, with:
- 85 hydrogen vehicles, including the world’s first hydrogen double-decker bus
- Two public refuelling stations
- The Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub supporting growth of the sector
Academic & innovation partners

Carbon capture, usage & storage
The Acorn Project at St Fergus is Scotland’s first carbon capture and storage facility, repurposing oil and gas infrastructure to store CO₂ under the North Sea. Phase one alone is expected to create 21,000 jobs.
